Review of The Loft (2014) by Greg B — 31 Jan 2015
"The Loft" is a movie about five men who agree to share a flat for extra-marital affairs. The secret pact they make is that each will be given a key to the apartment and they will be able to bring women to the flat or go there as a means of escape.
The movie turns into a whodunit when a woman is found handcuffed to the bed murdered. The movie turns into a psychological thriller where the cops try to play one of the men against the other. Honestly, though the premise is interesting, I don't think this movie fully worked.
Other than James Marsden, the movie is populated with actors who can act at a pedestrian level at best. I found the acting quite unrealistic and for the most part lackluster. The plot is confusing, and there are too many variables and twists for the audience member to make sense of what leads to what.
Honestly, the story gets overcomplicated and cluttered and makes the characters even less sympathetic and relatable. It is natural for people to become unhappy in their marriages at a certain point, and this is a relatable personality trait, but once the movie devolves into absurdity, it starts to lose me.
I also don't feel this movie was extremely well-directed or casted. There are honestly so many mistresses in the movie that I lost track of all of them ------------------------------------------------------------------- C.
