Review of The Loft (2014) by Brett H — 03 Apr 2015
Hollywood does it again and completely butchers a foreign masterpiece with stilted writing and zero chemistry among the attractive cast; you never believe these guys are long-time friends. This remake is shockingly helmed by the director of the Belgian original, and all I can say is the material was lost in translation because none of the suspense or surprises are present here.
The cast is all likeable and capable of great work, but none of them seem to care and it's painfully obvious the studio just went after popular actors instead of the right people for the roles. I pretty much hated this version as I could feel the North American, easy-to-swallow influences bogging down the film to the point of self-parody.
Do yourself a favour and watch the original version, because this is further proof that Hollywood has no idea what they're doing and remakes are their way to make a quick buck. This was also shelved for 4 years, so there's that as well.
