Review of The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) by John M — 13 Oct 2009
A unique Hitchcock experience incorporating obsessions familiar to fans of his work 2, 3, or 4 decades later. The Wrong Man fingered for a crime, the blondes pursued by killers, the misdirection, the Hitchcock cameo,....
This is a reward for fans of Hitchcock and for fans of silent movies. Some great set pieces and some surprisingly restrained performances. Still, I have to wonder if mature Hitchcock backed with his auteur credentials would have made the same film as young Hitchcock. My guess is he might have preferred to make something more akin to John Brahm's 1944 version.
