Review of The Lobster (2015) by Dana C — 31 Dec 2018
Iâ(TM)ve always been a fan of independent films. I like films that are different, unique, quirky, etc. I donâ(TM)t know what to make of this film. In the Indy genre Iâ(TM)ve seen a lot worse; Iâ(TM)ve seen a lot better.
I know The Lobster is trying to make some sort of statement about relationships in the world in which we live, I just canâ(TM)t figure out what that statement was! Itâ(TM)s been described as a dark comedy.
I donâ(TM)t find anything humorous about it, dark or otherwise. The performances were all excellent. Not a fan of Colin Farrell, but I was actually able to forget who I was watching and enjoy his performance.
The film is honestly quite intriguing and riveting. Sometimes an ending can literally make or break a film for me. This ending left me certain of the outcome, even though it resolves nothing, I felt it in my gut.
So, in this case, the ending made the film, at least for me. Iâ(TM)m still confused about the meaning of the film in total, but I didnâ(TM)t have to understand this film to like it. Part of me wants to watch it again; another part of me never ever wants to see it again! Is The Lobster supposed to be deliberately confounding? All I know is, as frustrated yet fascinated as I felt watching it, I never wanted to turn it off.
I NEEDED to see it through to the end. I somewhat liked it. I canâ(TM)t tell you why, I canâ(TM)t, I just did.
