Review of The Lobster (2015) by Wai L — 30 Jun 2016
One of the most uncomfortable movie to sit through, ever. The most awful good movie ever? There're a lot to unpack, our society's pathological obsession and policing and enforcement of coupling up; singlehood as disease to be cured; loners' equally pathological denouncement of coupling up; the tenacious grip couples have on their partnership status; the very criteria for the consideration of said all important partnership etc.
It's so utterly depressing and on point. I half wonder what a cinematic refutation of the thesis of this movie will be like? A disney princess flick? Some half backed rom com? At the end of the day, is there such a thing as a meaningful relationship?
