Review of The Lobster (2015) by Omar L — 11 Jun 2016
The premise is quirky, but after a strong first act, the movie devolves into a boring exercise in lonesome nihilism. Like "Idiocracy," the movie's best part is the premise itself, and not necessarily the execution.
The purposefully-flat line readings delivered by the cast are amusing at first, but as the movie progresses, becomes excruciatingly boring. The dichotomy of 1) couples only working if they have one thing in common (or children to be an argument buffer) or 2) loners only surviving to make life miserable for couples until they inevitably die alone starts off amusing and then gradually becomes frustratingly monotonous.
What is worse is that we never get to witness emotional payoff in either 1) transformation into an animal or 2) finding actual love. Fans of the film will argue that the cynicism is the point of the movie, but that point doesn't have to take two hours to make.
In any case, anti-Valentine's Day people have a movie to watch next February!
