Review of The Lobster (2015) by John M — 18 Jun 2016
The Lobster bites off more than it can chew. Director/co-writer Yorgos Lanthimos boldly ventures into two challenging territories: Charlie Kaufman (heady, abstruse, high concept) and Wes Anderson (quirky, abstract humor) without landing safely in either.
There are times when the diverse elements in The Lobster come together and it works, but too often the metaphors extend past the point of breaking. The makings of a better more cohesive film are there, but Lanthimos ultimately was unable to find the right mix of comedic weirdness, pathos, and social commentary.
However he put enough on screen to suggest a more fully realized vision is coming soon.
