Review of The Lobster (2015) by Jonathan B — 04 Jul 2016
I hated Dogtooth as fiercely as any film I can ever recall seeing, but I decided to give Yorgos Lanthimos a second chance and am happy to report his English language debut is actually enjoyable. It's a vastly superior work in my estimation and most importantly makes his weirdness, which often crosses over into grotesqueness, much more palatable.
Colin Farrell is hauntingly good, and the ways singledom and companionship are explored is fascinating. I'm not sure everything in the film totally works, but most of it does, and it's certainly on its own unique level.
Not to mention the ambiguous note it leaves you on will have you thinking back to it for days.
