Review of The Lobster (2015) by Graham W — 29 Jul 2016
This review will contain spoilers. In a future world, uncoupled people have 45 days to find a mate or they are turned into an animal. Some escape and become "loners" who live in the forest and are hunted to gain extra time. If you stay at the hotel, there are certain rules you must follow or else there are consequences. Serious offenses lead to transformation into an undesirable animal. Similarly, the "loners" are also strictly regulated with punishments for those who do not obey. The most serious offense among "loners" is to fall in love. PDAs will result in the amputation of a body part.
Now for some observations... both men who separated from their wives lie to get a mate. Is the film saying that divorced men are only capable of finding new love by cheating? Are women aware and if so, why do they overlook it for a period of time? Why do people only fall in love with similar deposed people? Can't a person with a snaggletooth fall for a model? Also, when a couple is formed and they have a problem, they are given a child. Do they grow this children on a farm? Don't the child's parents want their offspring? And, what kind of a man is the hotel manager's husband? He almost eagerly shoots his wife to save himself. No wonder they are so sadistic at that hotel.
