Review of The Lobster (2015) by Craig T — 03 Sep 2016
I'm not sure where to begin with this one. The was one of the most unsettling films I've seen this year. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos who also did the excellent, but very distrubing, Dogtooth. The story is incredibly original, but the premise had me scratching my head.
It made we question how a society could get so out of sorts regarding relationships and the desire to be alone, that this was the solution, is difficult to reconcile. As a thought experiment, it was interesting to watch, but I wouldn't say this is a film looking to entertain you.
It certainly had my wife and I discussing the next day, much like Dogtooth did. I want to say that Colin Farrell is brilliant in this. In fact everyone really dug into their roles. I recommend it for folks looking for something different.
It is surprisingly romantic, although the film won't just give it to you in the fun size bar you're used to in rom coms.
