Review of The Lobster (2015) by Kenneth H — 30 Sep 2016
The film struggled between identifying itself as a comedy or as a dark thought provoking think piece. I wish it had picked one side and stuck with it. It was too graphic and vulgar to be a comedy, and it was too funny to be taken seriously.

I'd like to use an example to illustrate the point I am trying to make. There is a scene where a lady attempts suicide by jumping from a low window but fails to actually kill herself... The director should have had 2 options in this situation, either make it sad and impactful by focusing the camera on her mangled bloody body, and letting you listen to her screams for an uncomfortable amount of time. OR quickly show her, and make humor out of it by showing a couple struggling to have a humorous conversation because their words are being drowned out by her cries.
But, the director did both put you in a pretty shaken state of mind, and the forced humor on you in a way that just left you feeling awkward and wondering if you should laugh or be in shock.
