Review of The Lobster (2015) by Jo F — 17 Jan 2017
Somehow, the charms of â??The Lobsterâ?? (DVD: Colin Farrell) mostly eluded me the first time, but I laughed throughout this bizarre comedy when I watched it again last night. It creates this world where Farrell goes to a singles â??resortâ?? to find a partner, agreeing that if he canâ??t find a mate within 45 days, heâ??ll be transformed into the animal of his choiceâ??a lobster (which live to be 100, etc.
). It turns out, the whole turned-into-an-animal thing is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the odd customs and practices we experience together with Farrell. It was very funny to me, but I know that not everyone enjoys its brand of dry, deadpan humor or the kind of laughs that bubble up as the camera lingers on a characterâ??s distress during an awkward or physically painful moment.
Comparing â??The Lobsterâ?? to other movies is difficult, but it has the type of weird characters that populate â??The Grand Budapest Hotelâ?? and the self-conscious awkwardness of â??Her.â?? While it was a bit long and some of the humor was a bit over-the-top gross, it's also refreshingly unique, Iâ??m happy to award â??The Lobsterâ?? an 8/10.
It probably should have made my Top 10 list for 2016.
