Review of The Lives of Others (2006) by Tazeen A — 07 Feb 2012
This beautifully made character driven film is the story of a mans faith in an ideal and his discovery that ideals do not necessarily lead to perfection. The little things that make us human are sometimes paid as a price for our big notions of a certain Â?way of lifeÂ?.
The pace of the film is just right as to how the situations unfold and the story progress. Although the film is set during 1984 regarding the struggles of the strict regime in East Germany, it can be easily related to post 9/11 situation in the United States concerning homeland security and privacy issues of citizens.
Via the three main characters, the film deals with freedom of thought and its power to overcome any barrier. But above all, what stands out in the film is the beautifully depicted humbleness of the leading character; the intelligence agent whose strength shines through his silence and seemingly cold nature.
