Review of The Little Stranger (2018) by Claire M — 15 Nov 2018
The Little Stranger is a weird one to talk about, Lenny Abrahamson paints this intriguing portrait that stops just short from the borders of the horror genre, this is fascinating I must say, this film plays on the psychological aspect of the horror genre, but you won't find any jump scares nor the usual tricks associated with the genre, it is refreshing, to say the least, the slow burn build-up allows us to examine thoroughly, as if we're presented with something we haven't quite figure it out yet, I believe that was Abrahmson's goal, he opted for that approach instead of the all too obvious AHA moment, again, very refreshing, I admire that sort of craft in a film.
Gleeson carefully creates his character as we can notice a slight shift in his persona as the film unfolds, Ruth Wilson as well help create a perfect atmosphere to complement the story as she captures the sense of looming danger.
The Little Stranger is an acquired taste, It's not an easy watch nor is it pleasing in the old fashion way, it is very unsettling by design, but it is effective at what it does, you'll find it to be quite good if you keep an open mind.
