Review of The Little Mermaid (2018) by Lauren M — 14 Dec 2018
This film hit on one of the biggest trends- mermaids. From clothing to accessories mermaids are a hit today. But this rendition of The Little Mermaid was exhausting to watch by the end. I do not fret about how it compares to Disney's classic, but the lack of attention to basic storyline and character development was laughable. I enjoyed it only for the fact that I laughed so hard I cried.
I appreciated the carnival theme because the Mermaid was one of the original attractions at freakshows, but despite that perhaps unintentional homage, the story felt empty. One of the cornerstones of any great story or film is our ability as an audience to relate to and care about the characters. This film gives little backstory and the emotional delivery sinks with and even more so stoic script.
I really wanted to like this film, but like the Mermaid, it had no soul.
