Review of The Little Mermaid (1989) by Erik W — 02 Oct 2011
Walt Disney Pictures The Little Mermaid.
This is the story of a teenager who learns just what the meaning of true love really is. It is not something that can be bought, understood, or reasoned with. True love is an aspect of all sentient life which denies logic and washes away evil. Ariel learns what love is... between her and her husband, between her and her friends Flounder, Scuttle, and Sebastian, and between her and her family.
In life, evil comes and preys upon the inexperienced and unwise. It will isolate the innocent, apply to their deepest desires, and swindle them into choosing the wrong path to righteousness. But what evil will never account for is the love between the innocent and those around them.
The Little Mermaid is a true motion picture, it is handmade with nothing but watercolor, acrylic, oil paint, cardboard, mylar, and tin foil. These were all that was necessary to create a masterpiece for the crew within those trailers on Flower Street. Comprised of the talents of artists, and the lively voice talents of the dedicated cast, the Little Mermaid was but a humble film that paved its own identity and success at a time when all doubted it, a true Cinderella film.
And nothing could ever equal in the the magnificence of this picture.
It is not blatant on any message giving it an unending amount of subtlety.
It's performance and setting are of high quality.. so it is timeless.
It is open to anyone who cares to watch..so its audience is wide.
And it does not take its audience for granted, nor does it insult the intelligence of any viewer, giving it the ability to be seen by children, adults, and elderly.
And most of all, the picture is able to be related to. The film communicates well and it means something....it has a spirit all of its own.
The Little Mermaid.
A True Motion Picture.
