Sadly the worst of the Disney princess genre before "Princess and the Frog," "The Little Mermaid" is certainly a brilliant work of animation, but the characters are not interesting or intelligent with the exception of the villain, Ursula.
The songs are more annoying than they are sweet, and the moral that you can get anything you want by selling yourself is pretty sad (and not in the good way).
