Review of The Little Mermaid (1989) by Jason C — 04 May 2014
The film that rejuvenated the House of Mouse and created the winning formula of musical numbers, lots of humour and cute animal sidekicks that Disney later ran into the ground. But here it's still fresh, lively and sparkling and Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's music truly transports you to a magical world under the sea.
Though Ariel herself is a little annoying because of her naivete and selfishness, Sam E Wright makes up for it as crab in hot water Sebastian, and Pat Carroll is lots of fun as super-evil and camp villainess Ursula.
