Review of The Little Mermaid (1989) by Ken S — 06 Dec 2011
After two decades of post-Walt Disney death syndrome, the animated studio finally found its feet again. Almost everything about this film is superior to the films made from 1970 onward (essentially everything following Disney's death).
Its animation is ten times better than even its immediate predecessor, the songs are better, the characters are better, and most importantly the story is stronger. Ariel is a decent protagonist, but it's the supporting cast that really makes this one work.
Sebastian is a great character in the Jiminy Cricket kind of way, Triton is a total badass, and Ursula is a strong villain. You can really see how this film launched what became known as the second Disney Renaissance of the 1990s, it brought a quality that was luckily matched in several films before Pixar arrived on the scene.
