Review of The Lion King (1994) by Adam R — 26 Dec 2013
The Lion King is one of those great Disney films. Disney has made great films and not so great films, but The Lion King undoubtedly should be recognized as a crowning achievement. Partly influenced by the Shakespeare play Hamlet, the film focuses on the young lion Simba, who is the son of King Mufasa and the next in line for the throne.
Simba's uncle, Scar, plans on killing Mufasa, so that Scar can become king. Simba is forced out of the land, but returns after finding his true place. The film is really a kids film, though it also works as a family film.
Parts of the film are scary and sad, especially Mufasa's death, but the film is still fun. The casting is perfect, Matthew Broderick as the adult Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa and Nathan Lane as Timon, while Jeremy Irons brings great villainy to Scar.
The songs are impressive, as well as the score. The film works as a Disney highlight and never disappoints.
