Review of The Lion in Winter (1968) by James M — 18 Apr 2007
Holy cow. What an impacting and disturbing portrait of a family. Unfortunately, and oddly enough, this hits home almost as forcefully as American Beauty. Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn gives two of their best performances of all time as the troubled, royal couple.
This film also contains some of the best dialogue ever written for film. It is both tragic and humorous as we listen to the biting tongues in each of the family member's mouths. What is most gripping is that no one is exempt.
Even young, naive Alais harbors bitter feelings toward Henry's sons. Even with their evil intents and bitter hatred for one another, I can't help but feel sorry for all of them. No matter how full of hatred someone is, we are all still human, and the beautiful ending in this film reminds us of that.
Brilliant.
