Review of The Lineup (1958) by Martin T — 21 Feb 2010
"How about some last words for the book?" A great noir thriller from the late 1950s starring Eli Wallach, Robert Keith, Vaughn Taylor, and Mary La Rouche, in which San Francisco detectives pursue two criminals in a drug smuggling ring who go on a psychopathic rampage across San Francisco collecting heroin from tourists who have unknowingly smuggled it into the country in souvenirs.
The criminals, played by Wallach and Keith, collect victims' last words in a diary, but Wallach's psychopathic personality eventually leads them to turn on each other in a fatalistic car chase on the unfinished Embarcadero Freeway.
A good suspense film with a smart script and direction, and nice use of San Francisco's sights and architecture.
