Review of The Limits of Control (2009) by Pekka M — 20 Jan 2010
Not a lot of substance to go along with the beautiful imagery. Isaach De Bankole has a really interesting look and a hell of a presence, but you get no indication of his acting ability from this. It's as if Jarmusch's directions were merely just: "Stare at anyone who talks to you. You can smirk every once in a while, but not too often." Simplicity can go too far sometimes and this is one of those times.
What does it all mean, Jim? What does it all mean?!
My take is this: This man has been hired to kill God. Along the way, he meets people who represent certain art forms, sciences, and sexuality, all things repressed with God alive. Once the man is in God's presence (fuckin' Bill Murray rockin' the house again!), God starts to barter and put down all of those things that were represented through the movie. To have full freedom, one must release themselves from God. That's the message I got from Jarmusch. Interesting ideas, but not enough meat for me. Probably my least favorite Jarmusch film.
