Review of The Limits of Control (2009) by Chris H — 19 May 2010
Jim Jarmusch has never made a bad film, and even with Coffee & Cigarettes, there was moments to enjoy, but if you were watching that film, then you probably have seen some of his previous efforts, and knew what to expect. Limits of Control, if this is your first Jarmusch film, is not going to convert you, but for those of you, who have indulged in his films, then there is much to be enjoyed. The story of a loner, doing a contract of unknown activity (eventually revealed as the assassination of a business man), which follows his journey to this point, and the strangers he meets along the way.
Its a slow paced story, but is layered with poignant dialogue, beautiful cinematography, and a great performance from Isaach De Bankol, who has popped up in other JJ films including the amazing 'Ghost Dog''.
It is easy to lose yourself in this movie, and will leave you pondering over the message behind it all / what Jarmusch's point is. Yes, like I said, its not for everyone, but sometimes you do have to enter into a film with open eyes, and not need the next explosion or soppy romantic cliche.
