Review of The Light Between Oceans (2016) by Marlene L — 19 Aug 2016
I was lucky enough to see an advance screening of The Light Between Oceans. It is a moving story that manages to constantly reveal true humanity beneath the sadness of circumstance and choice. Even joy and redemption make appearances in what might otherwise be an unforgiving, tragic situation.
The timing of the direction is deliberate and elegant. The cinematography, both intimate and panoramic, is brilliant. The ocean becomes a deeply evocative element of the film by how it is portrayed. The acting is flawless.
This is a mature, beautiful film. The only reason I give 4 stars rather than 5 is that the difficulty of pouring he entire end of a complex novel into the denouement of the film proved a little too much, and the ending, while satisfying, was a little rushed and overfilled.
A minor flaw easily forgiven for such a good work overall.
