Review of The Light at the Edge of the World (1971) by Mike M — 09 Jul 2014
A gritty, graphic take on a Jules Verne tale focusing on a man entrusted with the upkeep of a lighthouse eventually overrun by murderous pirates intent on luring ships to their grave (and stealing everything on board in the process) this flick (made in 1971) comes off with the intensity of a violent spaghetti western - and unexpectedly so.
Starring two legends (Douglas and Brynner) Light At the Edge of the World is not for the weak at heart. Bleak, savage and unrelenting, forget everything you think you may experience - and sit back instead for an adventure just this side of fare such as Last House on the Left or Straw Dogs.
Totally unexpected - yet totally captivating and enjoyable. Not quite exploitation, but wading in nearby waters.
