Review of The Life of Emile Zola (1937) by Calvin C — 04 Jan 2012
What begins as an intriguing up-and-coming biopic of an idealistic author ends up as the best kind of blood-boiling courtroom drama. the flagrant disregard for justice in this film, though purely cinematic, is the kind that makes me despise antagonists and yell at my screen--and I love it.
actually, I would have liked a bit more detail, both about Zola's life and about the Dreyfus case. the fact Dreyfus was Jewish was briefly shown in his dossier, but it was never an issue for the remainder of the film.
most of this film's content is pretty generic, so I guess I would have liked a little more meat. still, it's a very entertaining story and Paul Muni gives a fantastic performance as Zola.
