Review of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) by Dave A — 20 Jul 2010
The first time I saw this film, I didn't like it. The second time I watched this film, I really liked it.
Wes Anderson gets a little more ambitious in his third reteaming with Bill Murray (who would star in more Anderson efforts), casting the Ghostbusters star as a washed up sea documentary filmmaker on a quest to kill the shark that devoured his best friend. Movie has genuine moments of humility, blended with offbeat humor to keep fans of Anderson's work happy. Murray turns in once again, another melancholic performance as a guy in need of a boost, which might be the presence of his possible long lost son (Owen Wilson). The movie certainly has imagination and it's bold for Anderson to try for something a little more ambitious, but this movie will leave viewers wildly divided over who liked it, and who didn't.
