Review of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) by Dimitris H — 14 Nov 2010
Wes Anderson's "Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" is an incredibly unique and charming film, blending quirky characters and dark comedy with some genuinely touching moments, thanks largely to Bill Murray's standout performance as the over-the-hill filmmaker/oceanographer, Steve Zissou.
Murray's depiction of Zissou is surprisingly complex, perfectly capturing the vulnerability that exists beneath his otherwise distant and sarcastic exterior. His desire to find the elusive "Jaguar Shark" sparks an adventure that leads him and his crew (Team Zissou) through numerous obstacles and challenges, while Zissou himself struggles to reconcile his own personal relationships, particularly with his potential son, played by Owen Wilson.
The soundtrack is also fantastic, incorporating several of David Bowie's classic songs, both in their original versions and as covered by Brazilian musician Seu Jorge. In the end, Anderson has taken a unique concept and managed to find the perfect balance of dry humour and genuine emotion, resulting in a film that is every bit as touching as it is hilarious.
