Review of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) by Justice M — 08 Dec 2010
Although lambasted by critics, I see this film as one of the finer films in Wes Anderson's canon. With scene-stealing performances by Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett, and of course the always hilarious supporting role of Willem Dafoe, this movie is just as simple as it sounds.
Though I knew well of Anderson's bizarre screenplays, nothing could've prepared me for some of the most unexpected stunts in recent memory. The plot isn't convoluted, which is more than I can say for many other films I've recently watched, which makes it refreshing.
Though the characters in the film may at time seem too strange to be real, there's a certain humanity to their weirdness that makes them believable. The relationships among Zissou's crew are also quite notable, bringing complex components into play when Zissou and his apparent son have feelings for the same woman.
All in all, this film is worth it in laughs, and in quality of performances. You can't miss with Murray.
