Review of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) by Ted H — 10 Aug 2012
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou features Wes Anderson's characteristic dead-pan quirky, whimsical humor, but without the story telling power, consistent laughs, and overall engagement of his other, better, films. Life Aquatic is far too strange and disjointed to be engaging, the characters are odd but are so thinly written as to be uninteresting. The story and overall set-up is frustratingly boring and one-note. The humor is also very sporadic, with far more misses than hits. The surrealistic tone and acting style also wears thin very quickly, as there simply isn't enough humor or wit to support it. At the end, we have a clear case of "weird for the sake of weird".
2/5 Stars.
