Review of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) by Steve W — 17 Dec 2014
This is Wes Anderson's most excessive film, but I liked it. Oceanographer Steve Zissou has a mid-life crisis, with his partner killed by the elusive Jaguar shark, his marriage on the rocks, and an airplane pilot who may or may not be his son.
The film is stuffed with tons of characters, nameless interns, a stooge for an insurance company, a reporter, and some awesome pirates that make up the exciting portion of the film.
The movie is complex yet hilarious, with some things you never see coming. Bill Murray gives a fine performance, and his co-stars also bring up some talent as well. They are confident on the outside, but bubbling with interior turmoil at every turn.
With subtle humour, a little bit of action, and lots of the family ties themes we are used to in Wes Anderson films, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is an awkward but well made film, and one of his best.
