Review of The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004) by Jack Y — 01 Jan 2010
Brilliant performance from Rush and the publicity was right: in some scenes, he is indistinguishable from Sellers. Or Sellers as Clouseau. Or Sellers as Chance the Gardener. Some of the period scenes are neatly re-created, and Rush is teamed with some amazing actors: Margolyes, Vaughn (who really had worked with Peter Sellers) and Watson are excellent.
The movie moves along well, considering it covers a period from the 1950s (with Sellers on radio) to 1980. What does stand out is that the cast is very tall, to match Rush’s height; in reality, Sellers was of average height.
While a cruel and mentally imbalanced character in the story, Rush is still able to gain sympathy for and give humanity to Sellers. Should have had a big-screen release: it deserved it.
