Review of The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) by Francisco B — 29 Nov 2010
Roger Livesey is fantastic playing our glorious hero Clive Wynne-Candy. Following the General as he ages to the old man we see in the beginning is a joy. Watching him cling to his youthful ideals and the woman that got away all the way till we part with him is pulled off magnificently.
The film gets a major boost from outstanding performances by Deborah Kerr and Anton Walbrook as Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff, what a fantastic name. Age has both helped cement its status as a brilliant piece of filmmaking by the Powell-Pressburger team but dated it a bit with its political musings.
