Review of The Libertine (2004) by Dela S — 26 Jan 2009
"Sex, drugs and rokoko". Maybe I should have paid better attention to this subtitle before I borrowed the movie from the video library.
The movie wasn't exactly boring but hard to follow due to the old-fashioned English spoken in it and "somewhat" disgusting. It is based on the story of the 2. Earl of Rochester who did exist and obviously led an excessive life and I was a little shocked to see that, according to this film, back then all men were of the opinion that they couldn't live without frequent visits to the whorehouse and to the pub. In fact all women appearing in the movie seem to be bribable for carnal desires until or unless they are married. Terrible.
And Johnny Depp as this wretched and scarred pee-pants Earl almost made my stomach turn.... This is the kind of movie that I watch pressed back into the sofa cussions, hardly daring to move... I'm glad that it didn't cause me nightmares. :).
