Review of The Libertine (2004) by Henning R — 14 Feb 2009
A fascinating look at 17th century London - the mud, smell, rats and filth can almost be sensed. It's very bold to make a movie where the lighting is so 'bad', and many aspects of medieval life is portrayed in a realistic manner.
The acting is top notch, great cast. Depp for the most part plays well, although at times leans on his eye-movement and small facial twists to add to his character - which was unappropriate. The script is simply wonderful.
And the direction has some incredible moments - especially as he returns to the theatre in the start of the movie - it's very inspired.
