Review of The Libertine (2004) by Sarah C — 30 May 2009
This movie is very underrated. It is dark, and very 'true to life' in the depiction of hedonisitic times. It demonstrates the tragedy of a brilliant mind in total boredom and numbness who is in total battle with his place in life and the world.
Wilmot's only gratification is through the stage. Paradoxically, he seeks feeling through the gratification of the flesh, which is his ultimate demise. Brilliantly acted, this movie is for the individual who enjoys the true aspect of dramatic arts.
The screenwriting is nothing less than spectacular and if you enjoy the beauty of the spoken word...you will be spellbound.
