Review of The Libertine (2004) by Ugo P — 19 Jul 2009
Johnny Depp keeps me hooked, even when he's pox-ridden.
Depp plays the debauched and hedonistic John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, who lived fast, died young, and apparently left a hideous corpse. If you haven't read this man's work, do so.
This movie never had much commercial success and it's easy to see why. It's not for the faint of heart, with explicit sexual references and...well, Depp's character spends half of the movie suffering from a bad case of syphilis so he's not exactly looking his finest. It's quite dark, quite depressing, and you've got to pay attention to the dialogue. But really, I loved it. Maybe because I have a thing for debauched rockstars, and Wilmot was definitely the rockstar of his era.
