Review of The Libertine (2004) by Tom B — 07 Mar 2013
A strange, strange film, starting with the prologue in which Depp proclaims he doesn't want you to like him, but that all, ladies and gentlemen, will long for sex with him. That being said, you don't like him, you don't want to have sex with him, and you hate yourself for watching the film to the end unless curiously unsexy perverse and obscene talk is your thing.
Depp, as always, is invested in his character, but becomes more and more loathsome as the film progresses. Malkovich is interesting as the shallow, manipulative, and insecure king. Both Morton and Pike are beautiful, but only Morton's character has a semblance of self-respect and gives as good as she gets.
Hollander, Friend and Coyle are decent in supporting roles.
