Review of The Leopard (1963) by Ryan B — 25 Aug 2009
A sumptuous feast of Italian cinema, this period tale of waning aristocracy is filled with such style and class that it almost endangers the quiet substance which underpins the film's sombre and delicate tone.
With a metered and deliberate pacing, the cinematography shines and each frame appears like a painting. Lancaster is commanding in his leading role, rounded off by some of the most beautiful actors you would ever see on film, even by today's standards.
A cinematic oration of epic proportion that only Visconti can assuredly muster. Exquisite.
