Review of The Lego Movie (2014) by Jon P — 30 Sep 2015

Anyone who's ever played with Lego as a child will appreciate the attention to detail in The Lego Movie; a frantic family adventure driven by the peculiar powers of nostalgia. Anyone with a heart will find the movie oddly thoughtful in its touching message about individuality and self-belief.

Sometimes, there may be a tad too much happening too fast within Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's digital frames. However, for the most part, all the pieces fit together, and the film is terrific fun for viewers of all ages.

The plot is merely a base upon which creative set pieces and imaginative gags are built, but that's absolutely fine. Especially when we get a villainous Will Ferrell channeling all previous screen personas from Megamind to Zoolander's Mugatu. The final act is meta-madness and the entire movie is a lot smarter, funnier and richer than you might expect.
