Review of The Legend of Hell House (1973) by Michael T — 02 Nov 2008
Very scary adaptation of Robert Bloch's novel of the same name. Bloch wrote his novel to answer for the 'rational' explanation that Shirley Jackson offered for her novel "The Haunting of Hill House.
" He wanted an out-and-out balls-out truly haunted house with real spirits. This atmospheric and spooky film had the misfortune to be released the same year that THE EXCORCIST became a big hit. It features the gorgeous Pamela Franklin (the early 1970's answer to Jamie Lee Curtis) as a gifted and somewhat naive psychic while Roddy McDowall (wearing a turtleneck sweater and sportsjacket with elbow patches) plays a more experienced psychic who has witnessed the power of Hel House's spirit's before.
Very creepy stuff.
