Review of The Legend of Hell House (1973) by Sean C — 17 Dec 2009
Taking the same premise as the far superior The Haunting (I'm talking about the Robert Wise version rather than the awful Jan de Bont one) director John Hough's movie is nicely framed - dig those nicely gothic exterior shots of the house - whilst indoors Pamela Franklin carries the movie as the mental psychic who gets more of a bum deal than the others.
Nicely creepy just lacking a little something to really push it to a four star, hang on I know what it is, things kick off far too soon in the house so there's never any doubt that the house is haunted, that extra layer would have worked a treat.
Even if they had waited and built up things more rather than jump in with both feet it would have been better. Ideal ghostly treat though for the festive season given that everything takes place in the lead up to it.
