Review of The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000) by Alexander Z — 23 Aug 2012
I liked it a lot. Bagger Vance is a modification of Bhagavan, which is the title of Krishna, the supreme personality of Godhead in the Bhagavad Gita, the Indian scriptural text. Krishna is always described as a dark, handsome man--Will Smith fits that nicely.
Junnah is a play on Arjuna, the greatest archer in the world, who's chariot driver is Krishna. They meet on the battlefield of the great civil war between the Kaurevs and the Pandevs, which is symbolized by the match.
Would be interesting to see a retelling of this set against the US civil war. The whole film is allegory, so those with no understanding of Indian mythology would not understand, hence the mixed ratings.
