Review of The Lawnmower Man (1992) by Paul B — 09 Aug 2012
I found The Lawnmower Man to exceed my previous expectations on almost every count. I was very surprised especially by the acting being put forth here by Jeff Fahey and Pierce Brosnan. I really felt that Brosnan dug the role, for his character, which could've fallen into a very generic lead role, came to life through his believability.
If you can watch the film from the perspective of watching it in the 90's, the special effects won't bug you too much. It takes some getting used to, but for me, the virtual reality world was very cool and it seems as if the effects fit the film better than modern day CGI would have.
Very interesting concept is in play here as well, which could spark topics about the human brain and our next step in the evolution process with all your sci-fi nerd friends. The only thing that bugged me in the movie is the acting of some of the side characters, particularly Dean Norris, who I have come to adore as Hank on Breaking Bad.
his acting was atrocious. But I definitely recommend The Lawnmower Man to anyone who can see past its aged SFX and view it from a filmmakers perspective, because it was executed very well, despite the strange concept behind it all.
