Icy variation on the people go mad in remote location theme which intrigues but ultimately fails to thrill.

A group of engineers are sent to a far off Arctic location to look for oil but the thawing temperatures hold them back while some vicious wind picks up.

Ron Perlman, the king of this straight to dvd style offerings, is his usual gruff self surrounded by a cast of nobodies soon to become very dead bodies.

It's all a little confusingly done and the initial spark of tension is soon dissolved by a seemingly environmental message about global warming and man's destruction of the planet before seguing into a standard horror plot with weird reindeer ghosts.

There can only be so many times that the folk go bonkers in space/desert/shopping mall story can be done before it gets old. When it's done right, a la Danny Boyle's Sunshine, the results can be incredible but handled badly, it now makes for some very boring viewing.

To cap it all off, the ending of The Last Winter makes even less sense then the rest of the film and seems to have very little to do with the preceding rest of the movie. A good idea on paper but an over abundance of confusing plot points means this allegedly ice pick sharp thriller melts away to a rather muddy puddle.
