Review of The Last Waltz (1978) by Craig B — 23 Mar 2010
Scorsese wanted to make a concert documentary with feature film quality. He achieves it with The Last Waltz. It's beautifully framed and edited. The Band puts on one of the better performances that has ever been caught on camera.
Of course, getting Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and Muddy Waters (among others) to share the stage with you can't hurt! The performances are solid throughout.
Many critics consider The Last Waltz to be historically significant - a visual documentation of the end of a golden era in rock'n'roll. I'd have to agree with them. The film bleeds with bitter-sweet nostalgia.
And don't forget the extra features! The DVD is loaded with a bunch of goodies!
