Review of The Last Waltz (1978) by Colton M — 16 Jan 2015
One of, if not the best Rock n' Roll documentaries to date. It is beautifully put together and engaging. The concert footage is fantastic and the interview sections have a vibe to them that only Scorsese could bring.
If any band deserves a film like this it is most certainly THE BAND. I will say this film has lost a little charm for me after reading Levon Helm's book "This Wheels On Fire: Levon Helm and The Story of The Band".
In it, Levon details all of the drama and bullshitting that went on behind the scenes. At the end of the day it may not be Levon's favorite but I don't feel right judging it from those terms. If you want a great concert experience with some of the best musicians, singers/songwriters and performers to ever take up the craft, The Last Waltz is the film for you.
