Review of The Last Unicorn (1982) by Flore D — 08 Apr 2012
This film as the same musical mentality to at least any descent Disney film. The only difference is it is not Disney, it still has hidden Christian overtones but hey who gives the hell about unicorns. In truth I wanted the last unicorn to be dead namely because I am a vindictive prick when it comes to fantasy creatures and Stan Lee makes it socially acceptable with his grand voice acting.
I will not give away plot but say this to you, if you were young when you watch this and liked it keep watching it, if your a parent looking for a fantasy film for you kids? Yeah this one is a coin toss, it does have christian over tones and some dark moments but... it has a fucking unicorn so if you see a copy and feel compelled to have you kids watch it... go for it. Its a good fantasy film for those who still believe in old saint nick and if your kids are old enough for cell phones... well tell them to grow up and get the fuck out of your house.
If a ten year old can have a cell phone then damn right he can get a job.
Sadly that is the kind of way our youth is going, these animation films are being replaced by three dimensional movies with less and less heart.
The production team that made this actually tried to give it some meaning. The end if you were captivated with magic and wonder really breaks your heart. A cheesy romance true, but I like cheese now and again. It makes me feel human makes me understand why I watch Teddy Ruxpin.
The loss of our innocence our familiarity with the world of make believe is something to cry about. The day I found out Santa Clause wasn't real... it hardened me it nearly killed me at times. My mother said that once look on my face I got on Christmas morning was gone after wards.
I say this because people may not like this film but I do because it lets me know I am still human. That I can still dream and that for an hour or so, I can say "I believe".
I only wish I can say that all the time. Let your kids watch this film, it will help them remember that feeling, you won't regret that choice, because when you watch this after your kids have stopped believing by yourself. Then if one happens to pop in watch the eyes you may see something long dead and that's what this film gives us, it gives us "faith".
Faith religious or not, is still what dreams are made of don't waste it. Children grow up faster each year its only a few years and the magic is over. Don't miss it again.
