Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Andrew M — 02 Jan 2008
Usually when I see a Biblical film, I'm not that invested in it emotionally. Why is this one different? What makes this film special? Well, this one drew me in unlike most Biblical films, which keep me at arms-length.
This film is unlike any film on Jesus; why? Because it shows the human side of Jesus. Most films just focus on the holy, godly side of him. But the dogma is that Jesus is all-god AND all man. Now we see the man behind the martyr.
Scorsese is a master storyteller and makes this his own personal passion of faith. It has a powerful cast with Willem Dafoe as Jesus, Harvey Keitel as Judas, and small interesting appearances such as Irvin Kershner (director of Empire Strikes Back) as Zeebedee, and David Bowie as Pontius Pilote.
Unlike most spiritual films, I was deeply moved, and this is coming from an atheist.
